Spot Color (hand colored photography)...
Creating the illusion of tiny bits of color floating in a black and white field has become so common its almost a cliche these days - but to do it well is another matter altogether. In order to really create a well done "spot color" image, it helps to understand the history of hand colored photographs, some of the conceptual approaches to spot coloring your work, and how the concept can be used as a narrative element.
Your assignment here is simple - get used to working in two layers, using the layer mask tool, your brushes and eraser tools and menu's and your selection tools. Create 2 images...
One from "found imagery", and the second must be a photo you have taken. Add "spot color" in a way that creates a narrative, or tells a story. Think about the examples we looked at in class... |

The "Humanimal" - human/animal morph...
The Human/Animal morph has become a hallmark of Photoshop - again, almost a cliche...
However, this is a technique that has its roots buried deep in the early Surrealist work of the early 1900's (including such photographers as Wanda Wulz) when photography was still a new technique and not well understood by the masses. Its also an excellent technique to sharpen your skills and get to know the selection tools, the clone stamp tool, blending tools, exposure and color adjustment tools and in general, sharper your eye and perception.

Surrealism
What is Surrealism and how does it create a narrative?
Whats the difference between "illustration" and "graphic design"? How are they related and how are they different?

Ghost Photo (Halloween Homework)...
A wonderful technique and conceptual challenge to further sharpen your skills at photo-manipulation, blending tools, layer masks as well as add gradient fills and dissolves, introduce filters and blending modes, further refine your clone stamping tools and eraser technique and add the "photo-merge" tool.
In addition - this is another great throwback to the early days of photography when the "audience" was less sophisticated (or were they really) that has transitioned nicely into the contemporary realm of Photoshop. You will have all of October to craft your "authentic" ghost photo - and remember, the photo needs to be narrative in that it must create a mood or otherwise evoke a reaction in the viewer. |
